Basel - the city of museums

With more than 40 museums, Basel can promptly be defined a city of culture. The Kunstmuseum Basel, which was built in 1936 and now houses the oldest public art collection in the world, certainly deserves a mention. Not into art? Relax! Basel has much more to offer. How about a visit to St. Jakobspark, home of the FC Basel football club? With uncanny regularity, FC Basel makes a name for itself as the super-star hotbed par excellence. For example, Liverpool player Mo Salah or Barça legend Ivan Rakitic scored their first Champions League goals on the turf of the “Joggeli”. But it is not only football fans that get their money’s worth in Basel. With its exhibition centre, the city offers the perfect infrastructure for many event organisers. More than 25 trade and public exhibitions are held here every year. Among them - the world’s most important art fair: Art Basel. And if you still haven’t had enough, you shouldn’t miss a visit to the Basel Carnival. During the so-called “three most beautiful days of the year”, jugglers and other funny characters transform Basel’s city centre into a colourful madhouse.

In addition to leisure activities, Basel has always been an important commercial and financial centre. The founding of the university on the Rhine bend back in 1460 had a cultural influence on its development, attracting famous scholars, such as Paracelsus, the physician we should thank for many of the principles of modern medicine, or the mathematician Daniel Bernoulli, whose theories still shape hydraulics and aerodynamics today. Due to its good trade connections across the river Rhine, Basel was already an important transhipment point for silk weaving in its early years. Over time, the industry sector switched to the pharmaceutical and chemical groups that shape today’s economic activity in Basel. The city is considered a leading centre in both sectors and has been home to Switzerland’s two leading pharmaceutical companies, Hofmann-La Roche and Novartis, since their foundation. In 2019, Basel was ranked among the ten cities with the highest quality of life in the world, along with other two Swiss cities - Geneva and Zurich.
